Disney World Resort Comparison

Choosing the right Walt Disney World® Resort might not seem as thrilling as a ride on Expedition Everest, but with the right information (and a little pixie dust) we hope you will find that it really is a small world after all! In today’s article we aim to share the bare necessities of the Disney World Resort Options!

One of the first questions we tend to get from clients is how to decide on the perfect option in a particular resort or category. We like to start by explaining the differences between the four resort categories offered in Walt Disney World- including their prices. Comparing the prices of each resort also means considering the different discounts offered by Disney, as well as how those discounts can affect the overall package price of a vacation. For many offers it is important to remember that a room-only discount is usually tiered, thus offering lower discounts to Value resorts and higher discounts to Deluxe and Villa options. This is why we often show our clients that in some cases it is actually possible to pay less money to stay at a Moderate resort than at a Value! With this information in mind, we proudly present our very own Disney Word Resort comparison checklist!

Resort Categories:

Note: While there are only four resort categories defined by Disney, we chose to differentiate in the Deluxe category- thus creating a fifth category to compare.

  • Value: Large properties with unique, over the top themes and design motifs. Most standard rooms are accessed via an exterior open-air hallway. In some locations specially themed rooms are available.
  • Moderate: Unique, subdued resort themes. Access to most rooms is via an exterior hallway, with certain exceptions. In some locations specially themed rooms are available.
  • Deluxe: Elegant and highly detailed architecture and design. Access to rooms is via an interior hallway.
  • Deluxe Monorail: Often referred to as the crowned jewels of the Disney resorts, they offer spectacular service with the closest proximity to the Magic Kingdom. Access to rooms is via an interior hallway.
  • Villa: Charm, service and magic- with the comforts of home. In most cases access to rooms is via an interior hallway while some will have an external doorway.

Room Specifics and Price ($ -$$$$):

  • Value: Rooms tend to average around 260 sq. feet and most sleep four people plus a child in a crib. Most standard rooms offer double beds. Larger family suites accommodate 6 people plus a child in a crib. Best for those seeking a budget friendly resort option. $
  • Moderate: Rooms tend to average around 314 sq. feet and sleep four people plus a child under age 3 in a crib. Some rooms offer an additional banquette or trundle bed to accommodate a family of 5. Best for those seeking slightly greater resort amenities along with good value. $$
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Rooms tend to average between 344- 440 sq. feet and vary in sleeping capacity. Some Deluxe resorts sleep four people plus a child under age 3 in a crib, while others- especially Monorail Resorts- can accommodate families of 5 plus a child under age 3 in a crib. Best for those who seek the highest levels of extra services, recreation, dining options, proximity and unique transportation. $$$-$$$$
  • Villa: Villas range in size from 314 square feet up to 2,500 square feet at Grand Villas, and can accommodate up to 12 people and a child under age 3 in a crib. Best for those who may be traveling with larger parties and who enjoy a vacation joined with the comforts of home. $$$-$$$$

Bathrooms

  • Value: One sink, one commode, and one tub / shower. Suites may  offer additional bathrooms.
  • Moderate: Two sinks, one commode, and one tub / shower.
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Two sinks, one commode, and one tub / shower.
  • Villa: Standard bathrooms, which tend to vary based on the number of bedrooms.

photo(1)Views

  • Value: Rooms may look at a parking lot, wooded area, themed resort elements, or swimming pool.
  • Moderate: Rooms may look at a parking lot, wooded area, themed resort elements, swimming pool, or a body of water.
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Rooms may look at a parking lot, wooded area, themed resort elements, swimming pool, a body of water, or a theme park. Animal Kingdom Lodge rooms may overlook animal habitats. Entertainment such as fireworks may be seen from some deluxe resort rooms.
  • Villa: Rooms may look at a parking lot, wooded area, themed resort elements, swimming pool, a body of water, a theme park, or a golf course. Animal Kingdom Lodge rooms may overlook animal habitats. Entertainment such as fireworks may be seen from some deluxe resort rooms.

Dining

  • Value: Quick Service/Food court as well as pizza delivery to room.
  • Moderate: Quick Service/Food court, pizza delivery to room, and at least one casual table-service restaurant.
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Quick Service/Food court, full menu via room-service, multiple table-service restaurants and character dining.
  • Villa: Quick Service dining, kitchen and kitchenettes as well as other dining options depending upon resort.

Recreation and Entertainment:

  • Value: Multiple pools, arcade and playground.
  • Moderate: Multiple pools, water slide, playgrounds and arcade. Bicycle and watercraft rentals in some locations. Health Club at certain locations.
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Multiple pools, water slide, playgrounds and arcade. Bicycle and watercraft rentals in some locations. Health Club access at all locations.
  • Villa: Multiple pools, water slide, playgrounds and arcade. Bicycle and watercraft rentals in some locations. Health Club access at all locations.

Transportation*

  • Value: Bus service to all Walt Disney World Resort areas.
  • Moderate: Bus service to all Walt Disney World Resort areas, limited boat service to select locations.
  • Deluxe and Deluxe Monorail: Bus service to all Walt Disney World Resort areas, boat service from some resorts to various destinations, as well as monorail service. Some resorts are within walking distance to certain parks.
  • Villa: Bus Service to all Walt Disney World Resort areas, limited boat service to select locations.

*Transportation is a very important aspect of a Disney vacation plan. With the exception of the monorail, extended transit time must be factored into bus and water launch transportation. It is wise to allow at least 1 hour and 15 minutes for bus transportation. Additionally, strollers must be collapsed prior to boarding, which can present a challenge for guests traveling with young children. Conversely, monorail service is relatively speedy and can be as short as 5 minutes. Strollers may be pushed straight onto the tram and do not need to be collapsed, which can make for a smooth ride back to a resort with a sleeping child.
