How Will Florida’s Phased Reopening Affect Walt Disney World?

The move to reopen Florida begins Monday May 4th for most counties!

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis led his announcements with several slides highlighting comparisons between the expected impact of COVID-19 and the current statistics in the state of Florida. “Facts should be comforting” was one of his first talking points in today’s speech. The positive approach towards reopening the state’s economy transitioned from health statistics to a discussion of exactly when the Phase 1 Reopening Plan for Florida will begin for all counties with the exception of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.

DeSantis praised Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville Florida for having among the lowest rates of hospitalizations compared to other parts of the country. He moved on to discuss mobile lab testing plans and contact tracing efforts which will be a valuable tool in identifying potential future outbreaks in the state.

– Restaurants can offer outdoor seating with 6-foot spacing between tables and indoor seating at 25% capacity

– Schools remain distance-learning

– Retail can operate at 25% of indoor capacity

– Elective surgeries can resume

– No changes for bars, gyms, and personal services (like salons)

-Visits to senior living facilities still prohibited

-Face masks are recommended in all face-to-face interactions.

-Phase one also includes guidance to avoid socializing in groups of more than 10

DeSantis said that he plans to see each of the phases last for weeks, not months. With this considered, we are carefully monitoring how this timeline will affect the actual reopening of the Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Theme Parks. With a start date of May 4th for Phase 1, it will be critical to see just how smoothly Florida moves along as no dates have been set for future Phases that would directly impact Theme Park reopenings.
